State School Facts
Home schooling is permitted under the School Attendance Law but is deregulated. Parents assume all the responsibility for their student’s education, including acquisition of books, supplies and tests. To home school, an adult must be the parent, guardian or adult relative of the child.
Colorado has open enrollment throughout the state. This means you may enroll your children in any public school in the state on a space-available basis without paying an extra fee.
State law does not mandate kindergarten. Local school boards establish kindergartens.
Colorado offers the option of charter schools, which are public schools created by groups of parents, teachers or community members to reflect different educational approaches or philosophies. A charter school is accountable to the families in the school, the local school district or Charter School Institute and the state. Currently there are 110 charter schools in the state.
School Standards
Colorado’s comprehensive school-reform effort sets standards on what students should know and be able to do in core subject areas. There are two levels of testing: state assessments and district assessments. All K-12 public-school children are tested at pre-determined grades throughout a selected school year.
